The SPS Nordic program enjoyed a strong and successful 2021-22 season.  Our dry-land training began with long trail runs, strength work, and some mountain hiking/running.  Roller-skiing was also in the practice plan in advance of snowfall.  Once snow skiing was possible, we were ready to go - at first on flat and gradual terrain and then more challenging hills.  Snow conditions tended to be quite good and our 5 km trail network was well-groomed throughout the winter.  It was everyone on the team, however, that made the season what it was.  The Nordic program was just shy of 30 skiers, making it the largest in the Lakes Region ski league.  We were a mixture of both experienced and new skiers, but everyone grew in skill and ability throughout the season.  As for results, the boys team was regularly among the top three teams, led by captains Cub Scott and Sam Barnard along with Lon Walton, Zander Douglas, Justin Tarquino, Axel de la Roche, Max Landry and Rocco Burdge.  The girls were not far behind, often in 4th place overall.  Captains Margot Champigneulle and Caroline Light led the charge with Maeve O’Connell, Izzy Wang, Edie Jones, Addie Selch, Lucy Szal, Grace Yanes, and Katie Barker also scoring in races.  Both the boys and girls teams had many others racing alongside those who scored, providing fun competition and camaraderie.  2021-22 was a ski season to remember.  The team will miss all our graduating seniors but we also look forward to next winter.  In the words of one athlete, “I’m already missing it and I can’t wait for next year!”
