Spartans edge out Big Red

On Saturday afternoon, the boys varsity hockey team traveled down to Groton, Massachusetts, riding a seven game win
streak, to take on the ninth ranked Lawrence Academy “Spartans.” With visions of upsetting the home team, the “Big
Red” played a decent first period on the road. The “Spartans” made it hard on the “Pelicans” in the first eighteen
minutes of play by causing the visitors to turn the puck over in the neutral zone countless times. Lawrence Academy
scored the lone goal of the period to take a one goal lead when they broke in two-on -two on the St. Paul’s School
defense and fired a shot by the “Big Red” goaltender, Blake Truchon ʼ26 (South Burlington, VT).
Six and half minutes into the second period, Harry Dermody ʼ26 (Bedford, NH) tied the game up for the “Big Red”
when he won a puck down below the goal line in the offensive zone and worked his way into the slot and then fired a
low, hard shot on the net that found its way between the “Spartans” goalie’s pads to give the “Pelicans” some really good
energy and momentum. Five minutes later, a St. Paul’s School skater was whistled for a stick infraction and Lawrence
Academy went to work on the power play to score their second goal of the game. With less than three minutes to play in
the period, St. Paul’s School was whistled for another penalty and the “Spartans” capitalized again to take a three-to-one
lead into the last eighteen minutes of play.
In the third period, the “Big Red” skated desperately to get a second goal, but just did not have the success they were
looking for offensively. With less than six minutes to go in the game, the “Spartans” got their all-important fourth goal
of the game to make a comeback insurmountable for the St. Paul’s School skaters.
The “Big Red” resume action early Friday evening at 5:00pm in the Hockey Center when they play host to Lakes Region
hockey conference rival Tilton School. Friday’s game against the “Rams” and Saturday’s game against the Holderness
“Bulls” will be the last two regular season home games of the 2023 - 2024 winter hockey season. We hope to see you
there, as it should be an exciting weekend of hockey, and a great opportunity to see our Sixth Formers play their last
regular season games of their St. Paul’s School hockey careers in the Hockey Center!
