Big Red outlast Bobcats of Brewster

On late Wednesday afternoon, the boys varsity hockey team played host to the Brewster Academy
“Bobcats” in the Hockey Center. After beating Brewster Academy earlier in the season by a score of 4 -2
on December 1st, they would almost literally repeat the same outcome this afternoon for the all-important
“two points” in the Lakes Region Conference hockey standings. Today’s 4-3 win over the “Bobcats”
moved the “Pelicans” one step closer to fulfilling their aspirations of playing in the championship bracket
of the end-of-the-season's Lakes Region Conference hockey tournament in the last weekend of February.
The “Big Red” jumped out to a quick start in the first period by scoring a minute and fifty-three seconds
into the game. Jonas Eisman ’24 (Medina, WA) scored the team’s first goal when he stopped at the front
of the net and banged home a Quinn Brandell ’26 (Plattsburgh, NY) backhand shot from the right face-off
dot. For the remainder of the period, although the St. Paul’s School skaters had the puck on their stick the
majority of the time, they really never generated a lot of shots on the opposing team’s net. The period
ended in a one-to-one tie.
Despite the penalties incurred by the home team during the middle period, the “Big Red” skated with
more determination and applied a heavier forecheck, which resulted in a higher pace of play and three
goals for the “Pelicans.” St. Paul’s School’s first goal of the second period came off the stick of Anderson
Kilbourne ’26 (Duxbury, MA) when he and Matt Vohra ’25 (Valley, NS) broke in on a two on one and
made several beautiful passes back and forth to one another before Kilbourne deposited the puck into the
net behind the Brewster goalie. Patrick Cooley ’25 (Rutland, VT) scored the second goal of the period
when he collected the puck off the face-off on the right side of the offensive zone, skated and immediately
attacked the grade “A” scoring area and then fired a “wicked snapshot” past the goalie’s glove hand. Matt
Vohra, would score the game winning goal when he picked up a Brewster turnover in the “high ice” of the
defensive zone and then automatically transitioned up the left side of the ice with the puck and skated
through the neutral zone, across the offensive blue line to only delay and let Harry Dermody ’26
(Bedford, NH) establish a middle drive. Dermody split the Brewster defense and Vohra slipped in behind
his linemate and used him as a screen to fire a snapshot past the goalie from the top of the circles to give
the team that all-important fourth goal. To Brewster’s credit, despite being outshot significantly, they
cashed in on two power play opportunities and closed the score to 4-3 at the end of thirty-six minutes of
play.
In the last eighteen minutes of play, the “Big Red” controlled the majority of the play, but they were
unable to regain a two goal lead. Brewster played smart defensive hockey; whenever they were able to
win the puck, they transitioned effectively to offense to create several chances that struck fear into the
hearts of the St. Paul’s School hockey fans. Blake Truchon ’26 (South Burlington, VT) stood tall in the
net, and thwarted every Brewster shot he saw to seal the victory for the “Pelicans.”
The “Big Red” will head out on the road Saturday afternoon for the last official regular season away
game. They will have a 3:00pm puck drop against one of the top teams in New England Prep School
Hockey, the Lawrence Academy Spartans—we hope to see you there!
