Big Red double up New Hampton

Less than seventy-two hours later, the New Hampton “Huskies” traveled south to avenge their 7 - 1 loss
to the “Pelicans” on the St. Paul’s School grounds in the Hockey Center. The New Hampton skaters
started this early Friday afternoon game with pace and emotion, they opened the scoring five minutes into
play by banging home a shot in front of the St. Paul’s School net. A little more than six minutes later, Fin
Kilbourne ̕27 (Duxbury, MA) took advantage of a “Husky” goaltending miscue and deposited the puck
into the empty net to tie the game at one goal apiece. New Hampton, unrattled by the “Pelican” goal,
continued to apply pressure to St. Paul’s School defense. The “Big Red,” not as sharp and as engaged
physically as they were earlier in the week in Jacobson Arena, surrendered another goal to give the
visitors momentum and confidence. With a little more than a minute to play in the period, Anderson
Kilbourne ̕27 (Duxbury, MA) tied the game up for the “Pelicans'' when he attacked the net from the left
corner of the rink and jammed a puck by the New Hampton goalie. Kilbourne’s goal was the “energy and
momentum” the “Big Red” needed to find their game for the second period.
In the middle period, “The Pelicans” played arguably their best hockey of the year. They worked tirelessly
in all three zones to keep the pesky “Huskies” at bay and to get the go-ahead goal. Fin Kilbourne ̕27
(Duxbury) struck quickly and on the second shift of the period took a drop pass from Jack Stadheim ̕24
(Lyme, NH) in the high ice of the offensive zone and shot the puck off the pass to beat the New Hampton
netminder to the far side. Pat Cooley ̕25 (Rutland, VT), who was strong on the puck all afternoon, took a
Quinn Brandell ̕27 (Plattsburgh, NY) pass just inside the offensive blue line, waltzed deep into the “grade
A” scoring area, fired a shot off of the pads of the goalie to collect his own rebound and tuck the puck into
the upper left hand corner of the net for the all-important fourth goal of the game. Kilbourne and Cooley’s
goals would be the only goals for the period. The “Big Red” killed off two power-plays in the middle
period to squander any hopes of a “Husky” comeback.
In the last period of play, the game went back and forth, and the “Big Red” tried to manage the clock
responsibly through their defensive play. On the few occasions when there were defensive miscues by the
St. Paul’s School skaters, Blake Truchon ̕26 (South Burlington, VT) came up with the big save in the net
to give the team confidence in their ability to close out another all important win for the Lakes Region
Hockey Conference playoff seedings that will take place at the last weekend of the regular season. In the
closing minute of play, with the New Hampton goalie pulled and six skaters on the ice for the visitors,
Matt Goldenberg ̕24 (Wynnewood, PA) picked up a loose puck in the right corner of the defensive zone
and fired an indirect shot off of the side glass that caromed to the middle of the rink and then traveled into
the empty net for the fifth goal of the game.
The “Big Red” skaters will head into “Long Winter Weekend” having won their last six games in a row.
They will return to action, late Wednesday afternoon—a 5:30 puck drop in the Hockey Center to take on
the Brewster Academy “Bobcats” for another all important Lake Region Hockey contest. We hope to see
you there!
