Big Red score 7 on the road against the Huskies

In the last full week of January, the boys varsity hockey team played the New Hampton “Huskies” twice
in a span of seventy-two hours before both teams would begin their long winter-weeknd. The “Pelicans”
and the “Huskies” came into game one of the “home and home” series desperate for a Lakes Region
Conference Hockey win. On this Wednesday afternoon, in the Jacobson Arena on the New Hampton
School campus, it would be the “Big Red” that would get the bounces and skate off the ice at the end of
regulation play with a well deserved 7 - 1 victory. Harry Dermody ̕26 (Bedford, NH) opened the scoring
in the first period when he took a pass from Anderson Kilbourne ̕26 (Duxbury, MA) just inside the
offensive blue line, skated the puck in to the top of the circles and fired a snapshot to the upper right
corner to give the “Big Red” a 1 - 0 lead fifty seconds into the game.
Eight minutes into the second period, the “Huskies” tied the game up at 1 - 1 and then proceeded to apply
a lot of offensive pressure on the “Pelican” defense. The “Big Red” weathered the storm and then
proceeded to push back and generated a power play opportunity of their own with three minutes to play in
the period. Half way through the man-advantage opportunity with the puck in the St. Paul’s School end
and the “Huskies” going for a line change, “Big Red” goalie, Blake Truchon ̕26 (South Burlington, VT)
made a wonderful pass up the ice to the far blue line to Gavin Code ̕26 (Littleon, CO); Code proceeded
cooly into the New Hampton defensive zone, drew the defender over to him and then made a great pass to
Michael O’Brien ̕25 (Bedford, NS) who buried the puck into the upper corner of the net. Two minutes
later, Tommy Humphreys (West Simsbury, CT) reloaded above the puck in the offensive zone and
countered when Fin Kilbourne ̕27 (Duxbury, MA) won a puck battle in the high slot and then turned
around to make a pass to the streaking Humphreys, who fired a backhand shot past the New Hampton
goalie to give the visitors a two goal lead going into the locker room after thirty-six minutes of play.
The third period started the way the first period began, the “Big Red” scored in the opening minute of
play when Christian Yi (Lake Forest, CA) fired a shot on the net from the right point that redirected off a
New Hampton defender’s stick to give the “Pelicans” a 4 - 1 lead with seventeen minutes to play. For the
remainder of the game, the “Big Red” did a nice job of keeping their game simple, limiting the odd-man
rushes in New Hampton’s favor, and respecting their opponent. Michael O’Brien, Anderson Kilbourne,
and Tommy Humphreys would add three more goals by the mid-point of the period to the Millville
skaters a comfortable 7 - 1 finish and their fifth win in a row.
The two teams will resume action on Friday afternoon at 2:00 pm on the grounds of St. Paul’s School in
the Hockey Center. We hope to see you there!
