Big Red gets big Lakes Region win at home

On early Saturday evening, the boys varsity hockey team played host to the visiting Vermont
Academy “Wildcats” for their annual night game. The team wore their “away white uniforms” at
home in hopes of generating a “whiteout” with the student body in a Gordon Rink. With a small
“snow squall” present in the Hockey Center, the Pelicans scored a goal in each of the first two
periods and two in the last eighteen minutes of play to earn a good 4 - 2 victory over the visiting
team. Pat Cooley ̕25 (Rutland, VT) opened the scoring fifty-five seconds into the game for the
St. Paul’s School skaters when he took a Christian Yi ̕24 (Lake Forest, CA) pass in the neutral
zone, skated down the right side of the offensive zone, and as he crossed over the offensive zone
faceoff dot, he fired a backhand shot to the upper corner past the Vermont Academy netminder.
Matt Vohra ̕25 (Valley, NS) set up the team’s second goal of the game when Anderson Kilbourne
̕26 (Duxbury, MA) made a strong play when he was backchecking on the weak side of the ice of
and picked off a Vermont Academy pass deep in the defensive zone. Kilbourne quickly
transitioned the puck back up the ice to Vohra who then broke in with line mate Harry Dermody
̕26 (Bedford, NH) for a clear two on one from the red line. Vohra, skating down the right side of
the rink, deftly passed the puck by the lone sliding Vermont defenseman over to Dermody. The
“Granite Stater” deposited the puck into the upper third of the net to give the “Pelicans” a 2 - 0
lead. The visiting Vermont Academy “Wildcats” would not go away quietly; they responded
three minutes later with a goal of their own on a three versus two line rush to close the scoring
for the second period. Seniors Conley Bohan (Concord, NH) and Jack Stadheim (Lyme, NH)
were the heroes of the evening when Stadheim received a Finn Kilbourne ̕27 (Duxbury, MA)
pass deep in the “Pelican” defensive zone and skated the puck the length of the rink and then
fired a cross crease pass to the defenseman, Bohan, who deflected the puck into the upper right
corner of the net for his first and one of the biggest goals of the 2023 - 2024 varsity hockey
season. Littleton, Colorado native, Gavin Code ̕26, fired a shot into the empty net from the
defensive zone with less than a minute to play to give the “Pelicans” a 4 - 2 lead and a much
needed Lakes Region hockey conference win.
The “Big Red” will resume action Wednesday afternoon when they play host to the Joshua
Weeks, Tabor Academy “New Year’s” Invitational Champions, Milton Academy “Mustangs” at
5:15 in the Hockey Center.
