Big Red battle Wildcats on Gordon Rink

The “Big Red” played host this afternoon to the number two ranked prep school ice hockey team
in New England, the Kimball Union Academy “Wildcats.” Today’s game was the third game of
the week for the “Pelicans,” and unfortunately the result was similar to the previous two
contests—a loss. Today’s game would open with both sides skating well and creating offensive
opportunities. Kimball Union Academy enjoyed the better of the offensive play, but the St. Paul’s
School skaters hung right in there and created a number of good chances as well. Through the
first nine minutes of the first period, the “Pelicans” looked like they were going to make the
afternoon tough for the visiting “Wildcats.” With nine minutes remaining, and half of the period
to play, the “Wildcats” broke the seal and got on the board first to take a 1 - 0 lead. St. Paul’s
then gave up two more goals two and a half minutes apart, a problem that has plagued the team
all season long, to fall behind by a score of 3 - 0. Sixth Former, Jonas Eisman (Medina, WA) got
the “Big Red” on the board when he took a nice pass from Carter Corbett ̕25 (Skaneateles, NY)
off the left half board in the defensive end of the rink and skated down the left half of the ice and
fired a shot past the KUA goaltender on the short side under the crossbar. With Eisman’s goal,
the feeling on the home team’s bench was positive and the feeling amongst the “Pelicans” skaters
was that they had climbed back into the contest. Thirty-four seconds later, however, the
“Wildcats” dashed any hopes of a comeback when they scored two more goals in a span of
seventy seconds to close out the first period with a five to one lead. For the remaining thirty-six
minutes of play, both teams traded a goal in the second and third periods for a final score of
seven to three. Finn Kilbourne ̕27 (Duxbury, MA) scored for the “Big Red” in the second period
and Tommy Humphreys ̕25 (West Simsbury, CT) scored in the third period. Blake Truchon ̕26
(South Burlington, VT) was the hard luck loser in net this afternoon as he stopped 35 of 42
Kimball Union Academy shots.
The “Big Red” resume action on Wednesday when they travel north to Andover take on the
Proctor Academy “Hornets” at 4:00 pm.
