Big Red start 2024 at the Joshua Weeks Tournament at Tabor Academy

The “Big Red” varsity hockey team started the second half of the 2023 - 2024 season on New Year’s Day at the Travis Roy Rink on the grounds of Tabor Academy in Marion, Massachusetts. In the 9:00 am game of the Joshua Weeks Tournament, the “Pelicans” took on a strong Milton Academy “Mustangs” team. The Millville skaters got off to a slow start and Milton Academy quickly took advantage of the team’s lackluster start by scoring two quick goals in the first five minutes of play. Coach Murphy called a timeout to steady the St. Paul’s School players, who responded by playing a stronger and more responsible-brand of hockey. The first twenty-four and half minutes of play ended with the score 2 - 0, in Milton’s favor. Early in the second half, the “Big Red” continued to skate well and created a number of scoring chances. Two minutes into the second half of play, Matt Vohra ̕25 (Valley, Nova Scotia) connected with Harry Dermody ̕26 (Bedford, NH) to score a shorthanded goal, his first of the year, in his first game back from an upper-body injury. With the score 2-1 in the “Mustangs” favor, both teams raced up and down the ice and traded offensive chances. Despite a good effort, the St. Paul’s School skaters just could not create a game tying goal. Conversely, in the last ten minutes of play, Milton Academy found the extra goal they were looking for and expanded their lead to a 3 - 1. In the closing minutes of play, Milton scored again to put the nail in the coffin for the “Pelicans.” The final score was 4 - 1. Outside of the first five minutes of play and not being able to capitalize on their scoring chances, the “Big Red” worked really hard and played well. Blake Truchon ̕26 (South Burlington, VT) was the “hard luck” losing goaltender in net, stopping 31 of 35 Milton Academy shots.
