Big Red tops New Hampton in Lakes Region Contest

The Big Red hosted the Huskies of New Hampton at Pillsbury field on a picture perfect fall afternoon. It would be a great start for SPS.  Six minutes in, Will Iller’s ‘26 work rate created a turnover and Will slid the ball across the goal mouth to Colter Sienkiewicz ’24 who slotted the ball home for the 1 nil lead.  Fifteen minutes later there would be a flurry of finishes – three goals in less than three minutes for the Big Red.  Brandon Cho ‘24 from Lucas Miller ’25, Iller on another counter attack finished himself and then an Iller shot was deflected to Henry Wilson ’26, who found the back of the net to make it 4 – 0 SPS!  The Big Red took the convincing lead into halftime and felt that they had yet to play their best soccer.

As the second half began, SPS did possess the ball better and moved the ball from side to side opening up play.  Tom Wang ’24 would net his second goal of the season sixteen minutes into the half – a well-placed low ball to the far post - with the assist going to Asun Zhu ’26.   There was a feeling of confidence with a 5 – 0 lead and 30 minutes to play.  New Hampton did not quit and there is the story about counting your chickens before they hatch.  Don’t do that.  Play to the final whistle.  New Hampton scored three goals in the last eight minutes and thirty seconds of play to make for an exciting finish – at least for the spectators.  The final score was SPS 5 – New Hampton 3 as the Big Red has now won two of it first three Lakes Region contests.

SPS gets back on the road on Saturday to visit our friends and rivals of Phillips Exeter Academy. Come out and cheer on the right Big Red.
