Big Red Draws nil – nil with Cushing Penguins

The Big Red traveled the back roads to Cushing Academy to play the Penguins on their Senior night on a damp evening in front of a spirited crowd of parents.  The Penguins were a hardworking, physical side who possessed technical skill throughout their lineup. The Big Red was buoyed by the return of tri-captain Randy Fu ’25 who helped SPS create some possession in the midfield in the first half.  Fu had the best offensive chance late in the half with a wonderfully taken free kick that unfortunately went off the left post and the Big Red could not get a handle on the ensuing rebound.  The teams went into the halftime break knotted 0 – 0.

The second half saw the fast pace of play continue with neither team able to maintain clear possession.  Center back Carter Corbett ’25 needed to work hard to clear the few chances the speedy Penguin striker created, and he did so successfully.  As the clock came down to the final minutes, Cushing created several quality chances.  Big Red keeper Kristof Lovegren ’25 was up to the task – holding balls safely on the wet night and making a brilliant low ball save in the final 30 seconds to preserve the tie.  A fair result after a hard played game by both sides.

Many thanks to the Big Red Parents who saw the teams off with some delicious doughnuts and cookies to go along with plenty of pizza for the ride home.

SPS hosts the New Hampton School on Wednesday on Pillsbury Field.  Hope to see you there.

Go Big Red!
