A Thrilling Overtime Win for SPS at New Hampton!

The St. Paul’s Varsity Field Hockey team traveled to New Hampton School this Monday for a well-supported New Hampton night game. Fourth former Thayer Demers ‘26 scored in the second half off a hit taken at the top of the circle by Charlotte Wensley ‘24 on a short corner inserted by Cami Bell ‘24. An energized New Hampton answered in the second half, tying up the score. St. Paul’s focused on strong possession play in the back and midfields and relentlessness on attack. The forward line, including Bell ‘24, Kate Pura ‘24, Caroline Humber ‘25, Addie Hayne ‘26, Chelsea Bell ‘26, and Erin Flaherty ‘27 worked tirelessly and with incredible grit and risk taking. Wensley, Maude Niemann ‘25, Bella Perry ‘25, Sam Moyer ‘24, Addie Pinard, and Demers all used confident stick skills and great hustle defensively and in creative plays upfield. Eliza Ekstrand ‘24, Allison Jankowski ‘24, and Parker Hanson ‘25 smothered New Hampton’s feisty and speedy offense, and worked as a well-oiled unit to transition the ball from defense to attack. Ally Martiniello ‘24 made save after save in net, fending off the hungry opposition. After 60 minutes of regulation play and over 8 minutes in 7v7 overtime, SPS won sudden victory with 1:46 to go when Niemann sent a big ball up the right to Humber who handled it under pressure, dodging a NH defender for a pass across the net to Cami Bell, who, self-possessed, received the ball and sent a perfectly placed reverse chip at close range over the goalie into the upper right net. A perfect, determined, and deserved end to the surprise Cricket Holiday!
