St. Paul’s Battles Worcester Academy for Ninety Minutes

The Big Red soccer program hopped on their friendly Concord Coach for trip to Worcester Academy’s New Balance Field. The pitch was perfect and the air temperature just right for a beautiful fall afternoon.  St. Paul’s knew that their shape and discipline would be the key to success on the day.  With good communication from the beginning the Big Red frustrated the Worcester side and gave up few quality chances.  On the attack, nice ball movement from Pat Cooley ‘25 to Tom Wang ‘24 found Will Iller ‘26 in a dangerous spot for a well struck ball on net.  Worcester responded with a chance of their own and Kristof Lovegren ’25 extended brilliantly for a low ball parry to push a great chance wide. Declan Schweizer ‘24 was strong in the air and Gavin Nestler ’25 and Blake Truchon ’26 were tremendously consistent and intelligent as outside backs.  Very late in the half, Worcester rang a shot off the far post and the loose ball landed cleanly on the foot of the WA striker who finished cleanly for the 1 – 0 lead.

The second half saw much of the same as WA possessed the ball and the Big Red shifted, got in passing lanes and looked to counter when they won the ball.  Despite giving up one goal in the second half, the Big Red came away from the contest seeing how they can be successful in the games ahead.  Today was a positive building block for the young side.

No rest for the SPS club as they trek to Northfield, MA on Saturday to take on another quality side in the NMH Hoggers.

Go Big Red!
