SPS FH Ties Groton 1-1

SPS Varsity Field Hockey traveled to Groton Academy for the first game of the season on Friday. In perfect weather, the late afternoon game started with SPS scoring a goal on a corner that was called back. But the Big Red continued pushing in a game that went back and forth, with repeated impressive saves from goalkeeper Ally Martiniello ‘24. After a late game goal from Groton, SPS answered with co-captain Cami Bell ‘24 finishing a scramble in front of the net following shots from Caroline Humber ‘25 and Chelsea Bell ‘26. Big defensive coverage from Parker Hanson ‘25 kept the momentum moving forward. Co-captain Eliza Ekstrand ‘24 and Alison Jankowski ‘24 denied several Groton attacking plays and saved the ball countless times in the circle from near-goals, showing poise and determination under pressure. Charlotte Wensley ‘24 used her big hits and tenacious defense in the midfield, offering SPS many opportunities moving upfield. Sam Moyer ‘24 and Thayer Demers ‘26 worked together both defensively and with strong attacking plays on the right side. Sarah Ernst ‘24, Addie Pinard ‘25, Caroline Frost ‘25, Addie Hayne ‘26, and Erin Flaherty ‘27 each supercharged the Pelicans offense with speed and grit. The game went into 10 minutes of sudden victory overtime, with standouts Bella Perry ‘25, Hanson, Bell, and Humber showing fitness and finesse on the ball. Martiniello stuffed two 1-on-1 breakaways.
