Big Red BV Soccer ties Groton 1-1

The Big Red opened the 2023 season with trip to the home of the Groton Zebras.  With a large group of newcomers to the squad, the team knows that how they work together and support each other will be critical to their success this fall.  The match started well for St. Paul’s as they played on their front foot and looked to play forward whenever they could.  Changing the field well and often created several quality attacks, but the Big Red could not find the finishing touch.  The Zebra’s responded with a great chance of their own only to be denied by an excellent low ball save by Big Red keeper Kristof Lovegren.  With five minutes to play in the first half a clever through ball by Randy Fu sent striker William Iller in on a partial breakaway.  William used his body well and a last-ditch effort by the Groton back resulted in a penalty call for the visiting Big Red.  Pat Cooley slotted the PK neatly home for the 1 – nil lead. 

 

The second half saw much of the same even action.  Neither team could create quality chances as much of the game was played in the middle third of the pitch.  As time moved into the final fifteen minutes, the Zebra’s were able to create several chances. The Big Red cleared the ball away although they were unable to possess the ball for extended periods of time.  In the final minute, a Groton corner fell in a dangerous area and a shot just crossed the line - elation for the Zebra’s and a moment of frustration for the Big Red.  The game ended 1 – 1.  Lessons learned as the Big Red gears up for an exciting season ahead.

The 2023 Big Red Soccer Team:

The squad is made up of returning sixth formers Declan Schweizer,  Brandon Chu, Michael Nechipurenko and Cotler Sienkiewicz.  Add to that our returning fifth formers led by Captain Randy Fu, Pat Cooley, Kristof Lovegren, Lucas Miller, Gavin Nestler and Blake Truchon.

 

We are excited to welcome some great positivity the club in the likes of Carter Corbett ‘25, Leon Peng ‘24, Tom Wang ’24, David Kwon ‘25, Ryan Ham ‘25, Henry Wilson ’26, Samson Nyguen ‘25, William Iller ‘ 26, Hunter Morton ’26, AJ Zoltkowski ’27 and Teddy Sulger ’27.
